Ricci DeMartino

Ricci DeMartino is one of the most in-demand style experts working today. Currently based in Los Angeles, and with over 15 years’ experience creating style for the great and the famous, he’s played an active part in creating iconic imagery for the red carpet, commercials and the fashion glossies.  And Ricci DeMartino knows how to work a room too.  Literally.  Using the same eye and instincts that have served him so well in fashion, he has added professional interior design to his list of accomplishments.

“Dressing a person and dressing a room come from the same place,” he says.  “You not only have to know what looks good, but also that it suits the individual’s personality, taste, lifestyle and level of comfort.  My own signature look is Hollywood glamour and classic style“Dressing a person and dressing a room come from the same place. You not only have to know what looks good, but also that it suits the individual’s personality, taste, lifestyle and level of comfort. But whether styling a celebrity or designing a room, I always remember that it’s about them, not me.  I’m the conduit with the sources and experience, true, but my job is to find what’s best for my clients so they end up feeling as good as they possibly can about themselves and their environment.” “I’m the conduit with the sources and experience, but my job is to find what’s best for my clients so they end up feeling as good as they possibly can about themselves and their environment.” And for me, in both wardrobe styling and designing interiors there’s always the thrill of the hunt in finding exactly the right pieces.”

Ricci was born and raised in Connecticut.  He moved to New York City in 1982 to study Fashion Design at Pratt Institute of Art and Design where he earned his BFA degree.  He counts his junior year at Pratt as his first big break when he started working for noted knitwear designer Mary Jane Marcasiano, first as a student intern and then upon graduation as her assistant designer.

“I remember it like it was yesterday,” Ricci says.  “It was at Mary Jane’s design studio in Soho where I came into my own.  I was influenced by her exquisite sense of style, one that remains a part of my own personal aesthetic today.  And to this day, she’s one of my closest friends.

“It was at Mary Jane’s too that I first became aware of fashion styling as a profession,” he continues. “These stylists were always flying all over the world to do photo shoots and creating a  look for a person or magazine by “pulling” different articles of clothing from various designers and stores to create a whole new image.  I thought it would be an amazing way earn a living while doing what I loved most, shopping, being on a photo set (sometimes in exotic locations around the world), and creating  style from the things I found and pulled.  And that’s exactly how it has worked out.”

Ricci moved to San Francisco in 1990 where he started styling professionally, and two years later relocated to Los Angeles.  His second big break came shortly after his move to L.A. when The Cloutier Agency signed to represent him (as it has done ever since.)

“Cloutier has supported me all way from when I was styling fashion catalogs in the beginning to wardrobing the A-list celebrities and clients I do now.  I’ve styled for the Oscars as well as the Golden Globe, Emmy and Grammy award, and MTV movie awards to name a few.  What makes this job so wonderful for me is that the industry I am part of – and proud to be part of – recognized me as an expert and an important contributor to style.”

Ricci credits his strongest talent as recognizing style in every facet of life.  This has helped him predict trends and parlay them into a client’s wardrobe and this is what led him to expanding his vision into interiors. “It’s intriguing how often the same trend will emerge both fashion and interior design simultaneously,” he notes.

Consequently, while still keeping his styling business going at full throttle, in 2005, he launched his boutique interior design company, StyleLifeDesign.  Through the company StyleLifeDesign, Ricci also produces charming on-the-run insider shopping and styling videos on YouTube where Ricci scours the world, scoping out and delivering expert tips on everything from footwear to glassware.  Future plans in the works include a branded product line and a television program.

Today, Ricci DeMartino is exactly where he wants to be because he’s excited by where he’s going.  “Every day I give advice about style whether it’s fashion advice or interior design advice.  A typical day is for me to shop for clothing or work with designers for a client or hunt around showrooms, stores or online for the perfect furniture for an interior design project.  Ultimately, my goal is to bring style everywhere and to spread the word that with a little creative thinking and resourcefulness style is accessible to everyone, not just the select few.”
